How To Have Better Hair Than Everyone Else

Okay, no matter what your personality is, you want your hair to look it’s best. Let’s face it, most of us don't know how to properly care for our hair. Sure, styling products and shampoos can go a long way, but it all starts with the health of your hair.

Let me tell you some facts about your hair, and what you can buy next time you're at the grocery store to intensify the quality and growth of your hair.

Let me break down what our hair is, so you can better understand what you're taking care of. On our scalp, we have thousands of pore-like structures called follicles. Each follicle produces many hair strands throughout our lifetime. In each follicle, hair cells are forming constantly. As new cells form, the old cells die and are pushed along the follicle towards the scalp. Once the dead cells reach the scalp, they are compressed to form a protein called keratin. The hair that we see is the keratin emerging from the scalp. Our hair is actually 91% protein.

Your hair's health is dependent on the way you diet and exercise, take vitamins, and drink lots of water. Blood circulation from exercising regularly, directly affects the scalp and will bring new nutrients and cells to it.

Key vitamins that will promote healthy hair:

Vitamin A: provides protection for your hair from environmental toxins
Biotin: (part of the vitamin B complex) may help prevent hair loss
Vitamin E: helps protect hair from sun damage
Vitamin C: helps your body to produce collagen, which is essential in hair growth.

Other vitamins are likely to help improve hair health too. I recommend buying vitamins labeled specifically for hair, skin, and nails because you will be getting all of the vitamins you need combined into one pill.

It is important to know when your hair is damaged. When your hair grows, the ends continue to age. This hair has been washed, brushed, styled and exposed to the environment for a longer amount of time than the hair closest to your scalp. It is important to treat this hair carefully in order to keep it hydrated so it wont break off.

Products that will keep your hair hydrated and coated with nutrients are:

Coconut Oil:
The lauric acid found in coconut oil helps protect the protein in your hair and actually repair damaged hair. Coconut oil is also extremely moisturising, which helps your hair to grow and stay healthy.

Most importantly you will smell like the beach the next 24 hours.

Aragon Oil (or Moroccan Oil):
Helps prevent split ends and keeps hair strong so that it will less likely break off.
This oil is also a natural way to control frizz because it contains vitamins and minerals that sooth the hair and prevent it from becoming dry.

How do you use these oil effectively? Apply them to your hair when it is wet/damp (after towel drying). Then dry hair, and apply to the ends once hair is dry.

It is important while purchasing these products that you look for 100% organic options. Products that are not organic may include chemicals that can damage your hair. Buying natural, organic ingredient will help insure that you are getting the best quality products for your hair.

Don't forget all these essentials listed can be found at most major grocery stores.

Surfing?

It's 2015, which means its time to start the new World Surf League season! Let's be honest, if you don't surf or live near the coast its probably something you don't know much about. So I'm going to give you a little insight about the WSL and some of my favorite surfers on the tour this season before it starts.

Since 1976 the league has been called the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP). The new official name is the World Surfing League (WSL), as of this year.
The WSL is one of my favorite sports to follow because it is so unique and has such a positive atmosphere.

The season starts in February and ends in December. There is a women's and men's division so at the end of the season there will be a world champion for each division. The men's division is more developed and has more competitors than the women's, but it's equally exciting unlike most sports (ex: NBA vs WNBA).

The professional competitors in the league are from all over the world. The season is made up of 11 tour events in multiple places like...

Australia
Brazil
Fiji
South Africa
Tahiti
France
Portugal
United States (California and Hawaii)

Here is a "simple" breakdown of how to win.

Each event is set up in a tournament style bracket, and each round is made up of heats. Only two to three surfers compete in a heat. The scores are given from 0.00-10.00 for each ridden wave and the best two score are taken, which make your heat score. The surfer with the most points in the heat (max of 20.00) advances.

The better the outcome in each event the more points you get. Whoever has the most points by the end of the season/tour, is crowned the champion.

Here are a few of my favorite class surfers that I'll be cheering on this year.  (Click names to check them out on Instagram)

USA Sage Erickson
USA Lakey Peterson
AUS Sally Fitzgibbons
AUS Mick Fanning
HAW John John Florence

USA Kolohe Andino

You can get more information and travel alongside the world's best male and female surfers to the most remote and exotic locations in the world at the official WSL website. The site offers live event broadcasts, fantasy leagues, social updates, event highlights, and commentary on desktop and mobile. It not like all the complications of other sports you watch online. It simply streams live and all you have to do is click on it, no cable provider information or sign ups.

Don't Cut It

I don't think anyone should obsess over materialistic things, but I do think it is important to incorporate your personality and character into your physical features. It is inviting and shows people who you are without saying a word. Your hair is just one of those features that's noticed immediately.

I believe that keeping your hair at a longer length will improve and bring excitement to your lifestyle. This is an observation from my experiences, history, and nature's intent.

My experience:

My mom is a beautician (and a wonderful woman of course) so I have had about every hair style imaginable, except the mullet unfortunately. She would cut, color, and style my hair any way I desired. I remember in 1st grade I already had the whole highlight full spike going on (RIP). I played sports so I had a buzz at certain times and then the shag for a bit. The first 3 years of college I had joined a fraternity so I had the whole "frat part" going on, which also seems to be the common style for ages 30 plus. The past two years I have not cut my hair, and it is about 14 inches in length.

Out of all those styles I've never had so many comments and compliments as I have the past year and a half. It is often the first thing someone will bring up in conversation when I meet them for the first time or if it's an old friend.

It is also the easiest hair style I've ever had to maintain. I can put it up at any time or I can let it flow. I remember when I had short hair I had to fix it everyday. Don't let people trick you and tell you it's difficult to take care of.

History:

Men have more hair on their bodies compared to females, so why is hair on our head any different. It's not easy. You have to be patient and go through awkward phases. The best things in life don't come easy. If you have someone who obsesses over their "fixed/gelled hair," growing it out isn't for them.

I bet more men would have long hair if they could, society just makes them afraid.

Here is a list of a few significant/masculine men in the past or currently, that chose long hair.

William Wallace
George Washington
Albert Einstein
Thor (Chris Hemsworth)
Benjamin Franklin
Jared Leto
John Locke
Every male in the Lord of The Rings
William Shakespeare
The list goes on and on...

Jared Leto

Jake Gyllenhaal's man bun.
Nature's Intent:

Other than a shark riding on an elephants back, what would you say the most dominant and masculine animal is? My answer is a lion. I know just looking at pictures of them gets my masculinity pumping.

Male lions have manes, which distinguish them from female lions. A lion's mane size and coloration serves as a signal to other lions about the males fitness. In the mane, longer length and darker color provide interesting information about each lion. It means higher levels of testosterone, suggesting greater aggression, and were on average better fed throughout the year, suggesting dominance and superior hunting ability.

Your hair will eventually turn grey and stop fully growing. Take advantage of the time you have. I hope this post helps those of you in the process or encouraged some of you to start. You won't regret it.

Foreword

Life is too short to be little. Man is never so manly as when he feels deeply, acts boldly, and expresses himself with frankness and with fervor.

I stole that quote from Benjamin Disraeli, a former leader and prime minister of the UK. To be frank...I wanted a masculine quote right away to fend off women, because this is not just another one of the thousands of feminine filled blogs that continue to plague everyone's safari. This is also not a blog about being infatuated with how to prove your manhood with all the manliest do's and don'ts.

Man The Mane is a blog for men. It focuses on quintessence, hair ("mane"), and gnarly notions for trendy men as they strive to be great.

As men, we have times when we don't care about what we look like and what we do. Other times we want to present ourselves as best as possible. Unfortunately, we don't know everything...so that leaves times when we need help. Let's use hair for an example. Men have no idea how to take the best care of it, because "taking care of your hair is for girls"

...but we want ours to look great of course.

Is hair care really just for girls though? That is not what creation and nature affirms. You can go through countless different species on this earth and most of the males' biological ornaments are extravagant in color, impressive in appearance, and command authority.

Male (Left) vs Female (Right)

Female (Left) vs Male (Right)
Male (Behind) vs Female (Front)
What distinguishes you from everyone else on a daily basis? Is it how you present yourself on the outside, the way your carry yourself, or characteristics you possess internally?

I would say the best response to those questions is to have multiple answers. If you struggled with expressing your answer that only means you have to find it. Each man has endless potential, but the hard part is hunting it. In my time on this blog I am going to contribute little pieces to hopefully add to your distinctive qualities as you feel deeply, act boldly, and express yourself with frankness and with fervor.
